Founded in 1905 by M.M. and O.P. Van Sweringen, who purchased the land from the North Union Shakers, Shaker Heights has a long history of leaders who placed a great deal of thought in planning the community’s future. The Van Sweringens set out to make the first “Garden City” suburb in America by building beautiful homes, planting trees, developing a rapid transit system for easy commuting to downtown Cleveland, setting aside land for schools and churches, and adding to the four lakes developed by the Shakers. Their forethought has paved the way for Shaker Heights to set standards of excellence rarely matched in today’s modern communities.
Today, Shaker Heights is regarded as a vibrant community with a diverse population of approximately 29,000. Those who proudly call Shaker Heights home have access to the amazing professional, cultural and sporting events located in Cleveland, yet retains its own sense of community with its own fantastic attractions. Shaker Heights residents enjoy the local Thornton Indoor Ice Skating Rink and Outdoor Pool, but those looking to get closer to nature have four lakes to enjoy and the Nature Center, too. Families enjoy visits to the Shaker Historical Museum, the Shaker Family Center, Farmers Market and the community events held at the popular Shaker Square.
Shaker Height’s national reputation for excellence in city services, architecture, natural beauty and superior public education has resulted in many unique neighborhoods. Nine specific neighborhoods, Boulevard, Onaway, Lomond, Sussex, Mercer, Ludlow, Fernway and Malvern, were all originally named for elementary schools in the area. Homes for sale in neighboring Beachwood also offer the same tradition of excllence as provided by living in Shaker Heights. Homes for sale in Shaker Heights range from $100,000 to over $3 million and include amazing luxury homes. The communities are diverse and made up of professionals seeking to be within close proximity to all of the hospitals and educational institutions located within the Greater Cleveland area.
